We have recently implemented a data domain solution to replace an existing virtual tape library at one of our customer’s sites.  Their previous solution consisted of a VTL in their production data centre which replicated to another VTL located at their DR Data centre. The idea being if there was a catastrophic failure at the primary Data centre they would be able to fail over to DR and recover all their data from the replicated VTL. This meant that their RPO was determined by the replication speed of between the two VTL’s. With their previous solution this varied from 1-5 days with cleaning jobs to remove recycled data causing high CPU and disk usage at the expense of replication.

After the installation of a Data Domain in the same configuration we saw a major decrease in the amount of time required to de-duplicate and then replicate between the two VTL’s. From up to 5 days we saw this drop to under an hour. As well as this the amount of time required to run and manage the system reduced significantly.  A secondary benefit of these improvements enabled the increase of the data retention by 30%, and enabling cross replication of the DR centre backup’s to the production data centre.
